Pediatric Exams
Pediatric eye exams are crucial for a child's overall development, learning, and long-term health. Children's eyes and visual systems develop rapidly, and many vision problems don't show obvious symptoms. Kids often don't realize or can't articulate that something is wrong.
Identifying Issues Before They Cause Permanent Damage
Conditions like refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism), amblyopia (“lazy eye”), strabismus (crossed or misaligned eyes), and other issues can be identified before they cause permanent damage. Amblyopia is the leading cause of vision loss in children and is highly treatable when caught early.
Many eye conditions are most responsive to treatment in early childhood. Delaying care can result in lifelong impairment. Pediatric exams track visual development and catch problems when interventions are most effective.
Our Recommendation for Pediatric Eye Exams
- First comprehensive exam: Around 6–12 months of age.
- At least one exam: Between ages 3–5.
- Annual exams: Once at school age.
